The naming of Likör (Liqueur)
Likör (Liqueur) is named after the Latin word “liquifacere” meaning “to liquify”. The original idea of Likör making was to enhance the taste of alcoholic drinks by adding natural flavors like spices, herbs, citrus notes, and sweeteners to a beverage.
As alcohol has a natural ability to draw out and preserve flavorsome substances, this soon became an art of itself with different techniques, mainly by infusion, maceration, and distilling. The techniques may follow the same idea but gradually demand knowhow how to best create certain flavors off a herb, fruit, nut, leaf, spice… Some ingredients need crushing, heating, cooking, cutting, timing, and qualities to be used in Likör making.
